This working farm to the north of the Salcott Channel is owned by the National Trust. The Trust encourages its tenants to farm in a wildlife-friendly way, with conservation headlands and well-managed hedgerows.
Wildfowl such as brent geese overwinter on the grazing marsh and waders frequent the saltmarsh beyond the seawall.
'Red hills' on the grazing marsh, produced by the fires used to heat the salt pans, are evidence of salt extraction in the past.
Visiting
South of the minor road that joins the B1026 to the B1025 via Peldon, south of Abberton reservoir. Turn off on to Copt Hall Lane and follow signs to the car park at Lower Barn.
Accessible at all times.
Winter for wildlfowl.
A waymarked circular route runs across the grazing marsh and along the seawall. To reduce disturbance to birds, visitors are asked to use a shorter route in winter.
